WE54 Magnesium
Weight Reduction Possibilities
WE54 is a heat treatable high strength magnesium casting alloy for motorsport applications.
WE54 offers excellent machinability with high suitability for motorsport applications.
About WE54:
WE54 magnesium alloy offers similar corrosion resistance characteristics to aluminium casting alloys under salt spray conditions. It is a high-performance bar product which maintains its mechanical properties at high temperatures, up to 300° C. The alloy finds extensive use in motorsport in structural engine and chassis components.
Composition:
The addition of Yttrium boosts the corrosion resistance capabilities of the alloy to the extent that the material performs similarly to aluminium. WE54 provides good ductility and high strength, and the retention of mechanical properties at elevated temperatures gives the alloy broad appeal in various engineering applications. The material's properties are developed during heat treatment.
Machining & Welding:
Like most magnesium alloys, WE54 machines faster than other alloys. The only restriction relates to the speed and power of the machinery - machining times are not dictated by the tool itself. The alloy is weldable using TIG welding with a suitable filler rod.
