2040 Aluminium
High temperature performance
2040 aluminium is an ideal product for use in elevated-temperature applications.
The alloy was originally developed as a replacement for 2014 aluminium in manufacturing aircraft wheels and braking systems.
Overview:
Today, 2040 aluminium alloy has crossed over into other high-technology applications, including motorsport. The material represents a marked improvement when compared to 2014 T6 - the alloy benefits from superior forge-ability, improved strength, fatigue, fracture toughness and corrosion performance. Many of the alloy's properties combine to perform well at moderately high temperatures. The alloy performs even better than 2219 at higher temperatures.
Further Improvements:
Static tensile, shearing, bearing and compression characteristics are also improved. Consequently, 2040 aluminium also offers good suitability as a high strength, high-temperature structural alloy.
Applications:
As the alloy offers good elevated temperature performance, applications such as turbochargers, engine components and pistons all potentially could use 2040 aluminium. Suitability is determined by performance.
