The True Cost of Raw Material

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday 6th February 2019

Cost vs Supplier Performance

There is an old saying in the metal stockholding industry that the most expensive raw material is the one that you do not have. While many customers focus only on the raw material cost, there is a compelling argument that actually, supplier performance has an even more significant impact on your overall spend.

We live in a world where price dictates every purchase.

We all look for that potential saving, even if it is a relatively small one. We are taught to believe this is value for money and in materials supply, this is no different. Even a slight reduction in price per kilo can have a significant impact, especially on large tonnages. However, such a buying practice is potentially flawed. You may choose to purchase materials that are a few pence per kilo cheaper and think you have got a better deal but have you?

Quality Supply Reduces Costs

Savings you make on initial raw material costs disappear if you’ve partnered with the wrong supplier. Late delivery is an obvious example; however, there are many aspects of the supply chain process to consider.

How consistent is the product? Do you need to change your machine setup each time you receive new batches of the same material? Is there a variation in quality from batch to batch? These are all examples of potential costs to your business. What we are talking about here is effectively managing through-costs. Adopting a supply partner who takes a continually consistent approach to material supply is fundamental to any supply chain. Cost performance is not so significant at the point of purchase when compared with the costs you may incur due to late delivery, poor product quality or lack of stock certainty.

Smiths High Performance is not only a market leader in supplying the highest quality alloys and plastics to the motorsport market, but we are also different - our success is a direct result of the efforts we make to streamline the supply process resulting in highly efficient, accurate and cost-effective services.
