Stainless steels are a group of steels that contain at least 10.5% chromium. The addition of this element, along with a wide variety of others, generally improves corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at high temperatures making them suitable for a range of arduous applications.
Aerospace stainless steel bar is stocked in a range of both metric and imperial sizes selected to best match current aircraft build programmes. Bars can be supplied to many different end-user approvals either in full lengths or billeted to a size ready for machining operations.
Aerospace steels and stainless steels are defined within British Standards using a designation system within which all grades begin with the letter ‘S’ . Various other designation systems and standards exist although care should be taken as they are not always directly equivalent.
