Stainless steels are a group of steels that contain at least 10.5% chromium. The addition of this element, along with a wide variety of others, generally improves corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at high temperatures making them suitable for a range of arduous applications.

Aerospace stainless steel bar is stocked in a range of both metric and imperial sizes selected to best match current aircraft build programmes. Bars can be supplied to many different end-user approvals either in full lengths or billeted to a size ready for machining operations.

Aerospace steels and stainless steels are defined within British Standards using a designation system within which all grades begin with the letter ‘S’ . Various other designation systems and standards exist although care should be taken as they are not always directly equivalent.

S62

A martensitic stainless steel similar to type 410 but with an increased carbon content that improved hardness, strength and wear resistance. Corrosion resistance properties are achieved by the addition of >12% chromium and heat treatments. Not often welded but it is possible.

S124

A martensitic type 416 stainless steel containing 12% chromium. Excellent free machining properties due to the addition of sulphur. However, this comes at the cost of reduced corrosion resistance, formability & weldability.

Gen 416S37

Austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel in bar form. Moderate strength and niobium stabilised (347 type) with moderate corrosion resistance. For aerospace and defence components including weldments.

S144

A precipitation hardening stainless steel with high strength and moderate to good corrosion resistance. Identical chemical composition as S143 but higher tensile strength achieved through heat treatment.

S145

A precipitation hardening stainless steel with high strength and moderate to good corrosion resistance. Identical chemical composition as S143 & S144 but higher tensile strength than both achieved through heat treatment.
