Beryllium copper alloys generally have a beryllium content of up to 2.7% depending on the intended application. Other alloying elements such as nickel and cobalt are also added to improve specific properties such as heat treatment performance. When heat treated these alloys exhibit high strength and hardness and these properties combine with thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as good corrosion resistance, to make beryllium copper a very useful material.

Applications for beryllium copper usually divide between those requiring high strength and those requiring high conductivity. For applications requiring high strength, alloys with a higher beryllium content are used and require either a precipitation hardening heat treatment or an age hardening process. For applications requiring high conductivity, alloys with lower beryllium content are used (down to around 0.7%).

Alloys are usually supplied in the soft condition to enable cold working and machining before heat treatment of the finished component. Beryllium copper is also non-magnetic and non-sparking, a characteristic that makes it particularly suitable for use in explosive atmospheres (tools etc)..

A high conductivity beryllium copper alloy that has very similar mechanical properties to Alloy 3. However this alloy has an additional alloying element of cobalt rather than nickel giving it a slightly lower thermal conductivity and melting temperature.
