Aluminium tube is produced to UK aerospace specifications in a wide variety of alloys. Physical and mechanical properties vary a great deal depending on the alloy and the heat treatment employed making, correct product selection critical.

Modern mills are able to produce aluminium tube to many different tempers allowing for maximum flexibility in the design process. Dimensional stability during and after machining operations is usually important, especially if significant amounts of metal are removed. Stress relieving at the mill will minimise subsequent distortion. A variety of production techniques can be used to produce different properties including direct/indirect extrusion, porthole extrusion and various drawing techniques.

Aerospace aluminium tube is stocked in a range of both metric and imperial sizes selected to best match current aircraft build programmes. Tubes can be supplied to many different end-user approvals either in full lengths or billeted to a size ready for machining operations.

A low strength alloy (though slightly higher than 1050A) with excellent resistance to atmospheric and chemical corrosion resistance. Easily worked and welded. Supplied as cold drawn tube.

5251 O

A medium strength 5251 alloy with high corrosion resistance. Supplied as hydraulically tested tube in ‘O’ condition. This alloy is weldable and finds many applications in marine environments.

2014A T6

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually as supplied as tube in T6 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when heat treated.

L105

2014A T4

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually as supplied as tube in T4 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when heat treated.

6082 T4,T6

A medium strength 6082 alloy with good anodising and corrosion resistance properties. Weldability and machinability are both good. A versatile alloy with many applications. Usually supplied as seamless tube in the T4 or T6 tempers.

6061 T6

A medium strength 6061 alloy with good corrosion resistance and good workability. In the annealed condition it can be easily welded and formed. Usually supplied as aerospace tube in the T6 temper.
