Aluminium plate is produced to UK aerospace specifications in a wide variety of alloys. Physical and mechanical properties vary a great deal depending on the alloy and the heat treatment employed, making correct product selection critical. Flatness is often another key consideration selecting the right product for a specific application.

Modern rolling mills are able to supply aluminium plate to many different tempers allowing for maximum flexibility in the design process. Dimensional stability during and after machining operations is usually important, especially if significant amounts of metal are removed. Stress relieving at the mill will minimise subsequent distortion.

Various proprietary aluminium plate alloys have been produced by mills seeking to fine tune particular physical or mechanical properties of standard alloys. Many of these mills are approved to aerospace standards and these proprietary alloys should be considered along with those listed below.

2014A T651

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually supplied as plate in T651 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when used fully heated treated.

L95

7075 T651

A high strength 7075 alloy with moderate general corrosion and good stress corrosion cracking resistance. Usually supplied as plate in the T651 temper. Often used in aerospace applications for highly stressed parts.

L97

2024 T351

A high strength 2024 alloy with excellent fatigue resistance. Workability is good and it can easily be machined to a high finish. Weldability is generally poor although it can be flash spot or seam welded. Usually supplied as aerospace plate in the T351 temper.

6082 T651

A medium strength 6082 alloy with good anodising and corrosion resistance properties. Weldability and machinability are both good. A versatile alloy that finds many aerospace applications. Usually supplied as aerospace plate in the T651 temper.

DTD 5010A

2014A T351/T851

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually supplied as plate in T351 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when used fully heated treated.

DTD 5120B

7010 T7651

A high strength 7010 alloy with good resistance to stress corrosion. Slightly higher strength that 7075 but not suitable for high temperature applications. Usually supplied as aerospace plate in the T7651 temper.

DTD 5130A

7010 T73651

A high strength 7010 alloy with good resistance to stress corrosion. Slightly higher strength that 7075 but not suitable for high temperature applications. Usually supplied as aerospace plate in the T73651 temper.
