Aluminium bar is produced to international aerospace specifications in a wide variety of alloys. Physical and mechanical properties vary a great deal depending on the alloy and the heat treatment employed, making correct product selection critical. Stocks are carried in a range of sizes selected to best match the requirements of current aircraft build programmes.

Modern mills are able to produce aluminium bar to many different tempers allowing for maximum flexibility in the design process. Dimensional stability during and after machining operations is usually important, especially if significant amounts of metal are removed. Stress relieving at the mill will minimise subsequent distortion.

Aerospace aluminium bar is stocked in a range of both metric and imperial sizes selected to best match current aircraft build programmes. Bars can be supplied to many different end-user approvals either in full lengths or billeted to a size ready for machining operations.

5251

A medium strength 5251 alloy supplied in bars and forgings. High corrosion resistance and good weldability. This alloy finds many applications in marine environments where it is often used for structural components.

L102

2014A T4511

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually as supplied as aerospace bar in T4 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when used fully heated treated.

6082 T6/T6511

A medium strength 6082 alloy with good anodising and corrosion resistance properties. Weldability and machinability are both good. A versatile alloy that finds many applications in a variety of industries. Usually supplied as bar in the T6 temper.

7075 T73/T73511

A high strength 7075 alloy with moderate general corrosion and good stress corrosion cracking resistance. Usually supplied as aerospace bar in the T73511 temper. Reasonable machinability and it finds many applications in the aerospace sector where it is often used for highly stressed parts.

2014A T6/T6511

A high strength 2014A alloy containing 3.9 to 5 % copper usually supplied as bar in T6/T6511 temper. High mechanical properties with good machinability. Natural corrosion resistance is poor. Cold formability and weldability limited when used fully heated treated.

DTD 5014A

2618A T6511

A strong 2618A alloy containing 2% copper and 1.5% magnesium. High mechanical strength is combined with fair corrosion resistance. Good retention of strength at 200oC and above. Usually supplied as aerospace bar in T6/T6511 temper.

DTD 5124

7075 T6511

A high strength 7075 alloy with moderate general corrosion and good stress corrosion cracking resistance. Usually supplied as aerospace bar in the T6/T6511 temper. This specification has been partly superseded by L170.
